The home to F1 for many years, the Hungaroring is welcoming the teams from the Skymonkey Cup Tuesday this week. 25km north east of the historic capital city of Budapest, this circuit greets the drivers with flowing, interesting corners set in the beautiful Hungarian countryside.
The Skymonkey Cup is in Ireland this week. Mondello Park, near Dublin, is the last to be raced within the British Isles, until the cup returns after it’s world tour for Rounds 19 & 20 at Donington & Brands Hatch. The race itself will start early in the day, at an eye-watering 5am.
Mondello Park is Ireland’s premier motorsport track and has hosted British Touring Car events and the FIA Sports Car championship. British F3 and Superbike have also made appearances here in the past.
A 1-2 for the BMW works team sets them in a good position for season 2 of the Skymonkey Cup. A very close qualifying, with only a second separating the top 15, meant the race was always going to be close and interesting. However, on the warm-up lap, Paul Godden of Techsnake Racing lost it on the last bend, resulting in a lost splitter. The first lap was spent limping around the track with front-end damage before going into the pits. After the incident he was effectively out of the race. Darren Davie also had some bad luck, when at the same last bend, also, lost the back end and spent a lap in the grass, trying to work his way out, which he did eventually with the help of the stewards. Other than the pole sitter, Stephen Jelley, who had problems early on, the rest of the field had a fairly consistant race.
Round 2 of the Skymonkey Cup at Rockingham is ready to roll at 7 o’clock tonight. Drivers beware that this race is an evening race. Starting at 7pm, headlights may be needed towards the end of the event as the sun starts to set.
